Always Check, Never Assume!

A local cricket club recently organised a Bonfire Night celebration —hot dogs and burgers sizzling, drinks flowing and families enjoying the night. Everything was going perfect until…  a firework came crashing down and struck someone on the head!

Thankfully, the injury wasn’t too serious, but it did require a trip to the hospital where the injured party was treated and did have to have some time off work. Naturally, they approached the cricket club for compensation. The cricket club, assuming everything needed was in place, got in touch with the subcontractor, who had been brought in to organise the bonfire and firework display, for them to take over.

What’s the worst thing you want to hear when something like this happens?  — It turned out the subcontractor didn’t have any public liability insurance in place!  The club turned to their own insurer and they got yet another shock:
Because the event had been handed over for someone else to arrange, their policy didn’t cover it either.  The insurer explained that the onus was on the club to check and confirm that the subcontractor had the necessary cover and this was part of the terms of the insurance policy.

The result?  A hefty compensation claim paid straight from the club’s own pocket. Ouch that’s painful!

**DISCLAIMER – The club had NOT arranged their insurance through ourselves.
